KITEBOARDING TRAVEL - KITESURFING TRIPSKiteboarding Riders Trip to Green Turtle Cay,
Abacos - Out Islands Bahamas -
April 6-12 or April 13-19, 2008 The cost of the trip is $800/week - $500 deposit required to hold a spot - call 904-347-6872 This trip is open to intermediate and advanced kiteboarders only, which means you know how to go upwind. The Bahamas are one of the closest Caribbean islands to the United States, accessible by a one hour flight from several Florida east coast airports, including Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Melbourne, and Daytona Beach. The out islands of the Abacos in the northern Bahamas are one of the most pristine island chains in the world, with very few tourists and uncrowded beaches. Green Turtle Cay is a 4 mile long by less than 1/2 mile wide island just offshore from Treasure Cay, which is one of 2 airports on Great Abaco Island. It is accessible via water taxi from Treasure Cay for $7-9, and a taxi will take you to the ferry dock from the airport for $8-10. We recommend flying Vintage Props and Jets from Daytona Beach, Melbourne, or Ft. Lauderdale. The Yellow Air Taxi also has flights from West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale to Treasure Cay in a Cessna 402c with seating for 9 passengers, but there may be baggage restrictions, so please check with them first. Continental/Gulfstream flies out of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. The weather in the Abacos is very predictable, with mild temperatures and steady wind almost daily in the winter and spring months. Here is a chart of the average weather conditions by month. Barometer Bob also has a weather station at Man-O-War Cay, which is only a few miles south of Green Turtle Cay, so you can see exactly what the actual conditions are in real-time. For a detailed weather forecast, Weather Underground has a nice page on Green Turtle Cay. We will be staying in a house right on the beach on Gillam Bay, where you can pump up the kite right in front and go ride on the prevailing wind direction. This shallow sandy bay is perfect for kiteboarding at almost a mile across, with flat water and clean wind. There is a reef further offshore that we can explore with boat support for more advanced riders looking for some wave riding. There are also several daily excursions planned to neighboring islands for downwinders and exploration. There are a number of amazing coral reefs nearby where we can snorkel, spearfish, and even spear lobsters with a Hawaiian sling, or pole spear. The town of New Plymouth, is the first settlement in the Bahamas, and has alot of history, including the distinction of being home to the Goombay Smash, a popular rum drink in the islands. There are a number of good restaurants and bars to choose from, as well as internet access at the local library. Food in the Bahamas is expensive, especially on the outer islands, because it all has to be brought in by boat. We will provide some snacks for you while you are out riding and a cooler full of drinks. There are grocery stores in New Plymouth, and the house has a full kitchen, so you can stock up on food when you get to the island. We are sailing over early with supplies, including Smart Water for the trip. We are also bringing a 10 and a 13 foot inflatable boat for rescue and outer reef excursions, and as many kites and boards as we can fit on board for you to demo on the island.
