Spring kiteboarding camp - Monday thru Thursday, May 21-24, 2007 - call 904-347-6872

So you have already taken beginner kiteboarding lessons, but you still aren't completely confident in your riding ability. What you need is to go somewhere with consistent wind, a range of different water conditions from surf to flat water, and some experienced kiteboarders to ride with. Our intermediate kiteboarding camps are designed to take your riding to the next level, and give you the confidence to call yourself a kiteboarder.

Our camps take place in northeast Florida, based in St. Augustine Beach, where we take advantage of a variety of riding spots, from flat water in the intracoastal waterway to waves in the ocean. Check out a live webcam here complements of the Pit Surf Shop. We have an 13 foot inflatable boat for rescue and excursions, and 15 miles of beaches for downwinders. We will meet up each morning for breakfast, check the weather report, and decide where to kite that day. If there is no wind, there are plenty of other activities available in our area, but we only hold camps during the windiest times of year in Florida.

Our camps are based on a 3 to 1 student to instructor ratio, and you will get to ride with your instructor each day and learn new skills. We will also take video and photos if the conditions are right so you can take a look at yourself later on to help in your progression. Typical wind in the fall season in northeast Florida is sideshore from the north or northeast at 15-25 knots after cold fronts. Average high temperatures are in the mid to high 70s during October and November, with the water staying above 70 until late November most years.

Our most popular riding spot is Matanzas Inlet, which provides both flat water and wave riding, as well as a tidal current opposing the wind that makes it easy to stay upwind even for beginners. Here is an article about Matanzas that I wrote for Kiteboarding Magazine a few years back. The waves here rarely get overhead, making it a perfect place to learn to kitesurf, or ride waves with a kite. Kitesurfing in the waves is quickly becoming one of the most popular facets of kiteboarding, with new boards similar to surfboards with footstraps blurring the line between paddle surfing and surfing with a kite.

  • Immerse yourself in kiteboarding for 4 days – Monday through Thursday
  • Fly in on Sunday, kite all week, and leave Friday feeling confident in your kiteboarding skills
  • Cost includes ground transportation from airport and during stay for excursions, accommodations, breakfast each day and daily instruction
  • Cooler with drinks is provided, along with snacks and a sack lunch each day
  • Daily kiteboarding excursions and pointers from professional instructor, either flat water, waves, or a combination of both depending on wind, surf, and tide
  • Ride a natural tidal inlet where the current opposes the wind and makes it easy to stay upwind, no matter what your level of riding
  • Experience downwinders in the surf for the perfect opportunity to master your wave riding skills and jumps off waves
  • Skills progressions each day depending on riding level. Each day you will learn something new and take your kiteboarding new places
  • Try the latest gear, which we will provide for you to demo daily. At the end of the week you may wish to purchase the gear you have been using
  • Ride with top local riders and visiting pros. A few of our local riders are stepping it up these days, and riding with them is an inspiration
